Background: Depression and anxiety disorders are among the most common illnesses in older adults.1 The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been in use since the late 1980s, and clinical trials have demonstrated their efficacy in older adults with depression and anxiety disorders (also, several clinical trials have failed to demonstrate efficacy).2 SSRIs, serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and other antidepressants are the mainstay of treatment for these disorders in older adults.
