Background: Much research has implicated various brain regions in mediating adaptive and maladaptive behaviors associated with psychiatric illnesses. Recent work has moved away from conceptualizing the role of specific brain regions in psychopathology to considering the role of structurally and functionally coupled regions that form neural circuits or networks.
